Check the Fit Before You Order
Every boat is different, so please compare this product’s dimensions and mounting requirements with your vessel before ordering. Check:
- Mounting location: enough space for the davit mounts on the stern rail and for the lower mounts on the deck or transom
- Clearances: room for the tender, motor, swim ladder, boarding gate and other gear
- Load rating: the davit’s rated capacity covers your tender, motor, and gear
- Compatibility: it works with your stern rail tube size and existing equipment
Your stern rail and mounting points must carry the load. Davits put heavy loads into the stern rail and the lower mounting points, and those loads increase when the boat is moving in a seaway. The buyer is responsible for confirming that the stern rail and the deck or transom at the lower mounts can safely carry the full load the davits will carry.
The buyer is ultimately responsible for ensuring the product fits the boat and intended use.
Stern Rail Reinforcement
A davit holds its load out past its mounting base, so the load acts as a lever on the stern rail. The davit’s rail-mount clamps and the stern rail have to resist that leverage. In a seaway, a tender’s motion can multiply the load on the rail to two or three times its static weight. Before installing a davit, make sure your stern rail can handle this dynamic load. If not, you can add diagonal braces (support arms).
Reinforcement options:
- Support arms (diagonal braces) stop fore-and-aft flexing. Each arm runs from the stern rail or davit down to the deck or transom, forming a rigid triangle. This carries the load as straight-line tension and compression instead of bending the rail. A properly installed support arm can make the rail many times stiffer fore-and-aft, up to 100 times in typical installations.
- A cross-tie (stabilizer strut) connects the two davit arms so they brace each other against side-to-side movement.
- Split stern rails, with an open walk-through at the centerline, may need additional side-to-side bracing.
Not sure what your rail needs? Send us photos and measurements of your stern rail, and we’ll recommend the right setup.
